When wisdom teeth erupt, this can lead to various problems. In most cases, it is not the teeth themselves that cause discomfort. It becomes problematic if there is not enough space in the jaw and other teeth shift. It can also happen that the wisdom teeth do not erupt or only partially erupt. In dentistry, this is referred to as retention or partial retention. Such teeth often lie at an angle in the jaw, making them difficult to clean. This often results in chronic probelms such as gum pockets, tooth decay and inflammation.

In most patients cases, wisdom teeth erupt between the ages of 16 and 22. It is not always necessary to have the wisdom teeth extracted at this time. At our dental practice finest smile in Zurich, we look at each case individually. If symptoms occur or problems with the other teeth are foreseeable, we may decide to extract the wisdom teeth in consultation with the patient.

Frequently asked questions about wisdom tooth extraction in Zurich

We recommend having wisdom teeth extracted if acute symptoms occur or if there are problems with the surrounding teeth and gums. This is often the case with wisdom teeth that only partially erupt and are difficult to clean due to their position.

Furthermore, wisdom tooth surgery may be necessary if there is not enough space in the jaw for all the teeth. In this case, the wisdom teeth should be extracted before they erupt in order to prevent the other teeth from shifting.

Fully erupted teeth can be extracted like any other tooth (non-operative). If we need to extract wisdom teeth that have not erupted or have erupted incompletely, wisdom tooth surgery is necessary. We open the gums, expose the tooth and remove it from the jawbone. At our practice in Zurich, we decide for each patient individually which method we will use to extract the wisdom teeth.

At our dental practice in Zurich, we attach great importance to pain-free treatment. You therefore don`t need to worry that the wisdom tooth surgery will cause you pain.

In general, the treatment can be carried out under local anesthesia. If we have to extract several wisdom teeth or you are very nervous before the procedure, we will be happy to discuss the possibility of nitrous oxide sedation or general anesthesia with you.

After the removal of the wisdom teeth, you may experience minor pain for a few days, for which we will prescribe an analgesic medication.

If you prefer, we can remove all your wisdom teeth at the same time. The downtime can be shortened in this way. However, we often recommend that our patients only have their wisdom teeth extracted on one side first so that they can continue to chew on the other side without any problems.

After extraction of the wisdom teeth, you should allow for a downtime of around 2 - 7 days. When you will be fully functional again depends, among other things, on how extensive the wisdom tooth surgery is and how many teeth need to be extracted.

We recommend a sports break of 3-7 days after wisdom teeth extraction, and longer if necessary for more extensive procedures. Your dentist will discuss with you how long you should take it easy in your preferred sport during the preliminary consultation.

In the days following wisdom tooth surgery, you should preferably eat soft foods. In principle, however, you can eat and drink normally.

What should be considered before wisdom tooth surgery?

If your dentist recommends that your wisdom teeth need to be extracted, he or she will first have a detailed discussion with you. You will find out how wisdom tooth surgery works and which method we can use to remove your wisdom teeth as gently as possible. An operation date will then be set together with you. Depending on the extent of the treatment, several appointments may be necessary.

You should be prepared to take a break from strenuous activities for a few days after wisdom teeth extraction. We also recommend that you have soft food and cooling pads ready for the time after the operation. Ideally, you should have someone close to you accompany you to your wisdom tooth surgery, as it is not recommended to drive after recieving local anaesthesia.

How does wisdom tooth surgery in Zurich work?

In general, wisdom tooth surgery in Zurich is performed under local anesthesia. If the wisdom teeth have fully erupted, the operation is simple. The teeth are extracted as normal, which takes about half an hour. If we have to extract all four wisdom teeth, the removal may take a little longer.

If a wisdom tooth has not yet erupted, the dentist opens the gum to expose the tooth. The tooth is then detached from the bone and, if possible, removed in its entirety. If this is not possible, the wisdom tooth can also be cut up and removed in pieces. Finally, the gum is closed again and the wound sutured.

What needs to be considered after wisdom tooth extraction?

After wisdom tooth surgery, you should take it easy for a few days and cool the treatment area extensively to prevent swelling. We will prescribe an analgesic medication to relieve any initial pain. You should clean the treatment sites very carefully after the procedure and prefer soft foods. The stitches are removed in Zurich around a week after the wisdom teeth extraction. Your dentist will check the surgical wounds and make sure that they are healing without complications.
