Frequently asked questions about orthodontics Zurich
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with misalignments and malformations of teeth and jaws. Such malformations usually become apparent in childhood and can become a problem later in life. As the chewing apparatus is connected to the rest of the musculoskeletal system, the health consequences are not always limited to the jaw region. The aim of orthodontic treatment is to detect and correct malocclusions and malformations as early as possible.
What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dentist with additional training in the field of orthodontics. As part of several years of further training, the orthodontist specializes in the functional relationships between the jaw and teeth. The tasks of an orthodontist include correcting tooth movements and influencing jaw growth with orthodontic measures.
Which tooth and jaw misalignments can be treated?
At our orthodontic practice in Zurich, we treat all common tooth misalignments, problems with the bite as well as misalignments and malformations of the jaw. This includes functional as well as aesthetic problems, such as crooked teeth in the anterior region. Temporomandibular joint problems can also be treated as part of splint therapy, for example.
In children, we also look at problems with tooth eruption, for example when teeth do not erupt at all or only partially. Furthermore, a small jaw can lead to a lack of space (crowding). Here too, the orthodontist intervenes at an early stage to prevent the teeth from shifting.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on the type and severity of the misalignment and the amount of treatment required. At our dental practice in Zurich, we always carry out a thorough initial examination first. The orthodontist then discusses the treatment requirements with you and draws up a cost estimate. Orthodontic treatment is often covered by health insurance.
What treatments does orthodontics include?
At our orthodontic practice in Zurich, we offer various treatment concepts that are precisely tailored to the patient's needs. Many malocclusions can be optimally corrected with fixed or removable braces. This classic orthodontic aid is still very important today, especially in the treatment of children and adolescents.
For our adult patients, we have inconspicuous alternatives to choose from, such as invisible, removable braces from the world market leader Invisalign® or Spark™. Lingual braces, which are invisibly attached to the inside of the teeth, are also an alternative to traditional fixed braces.
In many cases, we successfully treat temporomandibular joint problems with splint therapy. This involves making individual occlusal splints to relieve the strain on the temporomandibular joints and alleviate the symptoms. In all cases, a thorough examination is carried out beforehand to get to the bottom of the causes of your complaints. Orthodontic and conventional dental treatment often go hand in hand here, for example if poorly fitted dentures are causing problems.
When should I see an orthodontist?
A visit to an orthodontist is recommended if you suffer from temporomandibular joint problems or have problems with the way your teeth bite together. From an aesthetic point of view, orthodontic treatment can be useful if you are bothered by the position of your teeth and would like to have them corrected.
The orthodontist is also the right contact for snoring and teeth grinding. The causes are often to be found in the dentition or temporomandibular joint. Targeted functional therapy can often achieve a lasting improvement.
For children, we recommend an initial orthodontic examination at around 6 years of age, or earlier if advised by the dentist. Many misalignments can be diagnosed at this stage and treated early on before they become a serious problem.
