Children's orthodontics in Zurich

Orthodontic treatment is often useful and important from an early age. Many misalignments of the teeth and jaw can be easily corrected if they are treated early. At our children's orthodontics clinic in Zurich, we therefore focus all our attention on our young patients.

We carry out initial orthodontic examinations in Zurich from around the age of 6. The aim is to detect and treat later misalignments as early as possible before they lead to more serious problems.

We will be happy to advise you in detail on the subject of children's orthodontics at our dental practice. All orthodontic treatments, including splint therapy, are planned, supervised and monitored by our experienced orthodontic specialist, Dr. Eberbach.

In a personal consultation, you will find out whether orthodontic treatment is necessary for your child and how we can steer the development of the jaw and teeth in the desired direction.

Frequently asked questions about children's orthodontics Zurich

An initial orthodontic examination is advisable from around the age of 6. At this age, we can already recognize many later problems and take targeted countermeasures.

An orthodontic examination can also be useful for infants, for example if the baby breathes through the mouth or sleeps with its mouth open. Problems with breastfeeding can also have their cause in the jaw region and should therefore be assessed by an orthodontist if necessary.

At our children's orthodontics clinic in Zurich, we treat various types of malocclusions and malformations of the jaw. These include an open bite, overbite or overbite. With these malocclusions, the incisors do not meet correctly. Furthermore, crowding can occur if the jaw does not provide enough space for all the teeth.

Problems with tooth eruption also fall within the remit of the orthodontist. If teeth do not erupt, erupt crookedly or are not aligned at all, we can correct this with orthodontic measures.

The duration of orthodontic treatment can vary greatly depending on the type of misalignment. Basically, the earlier treatment is started, the easier and quicker it is to correct misalignments.

On average, braces are worn for around 2 - 3 years during treatment as a child. This is followed by a so-called retention phase, in which we stabilize the position of the teeth so that they do not move back again. The retention phase lasts at least another year. During this time, however, your child is hardly restricted in everyday life.

Orthodontic treatment is generally not associated with pain. If your child is fitted with braces, slight pressure discomfort may occur in the beginning until the child gets used to the new situation. However, the teeth are moved very slowly, so the discomfort should be limited.

When treating children, it takes a lot of patience for the child to understand exactly why the measures taken are important. In Zurich, we therefore take a lot of time for our young patients. All treatment steps are explained in a child-friendly way. We also take the time to answer questions from children and parents.

When should I take my child to the orthodontist?

A first visit to the orthodontist makes sense from the age of around 6. During this time, the jaw and teeth are still developing. The orthodontist can detect many misalignments at this stage before they manifest themselves. If, for example, problems with growth or tooth eruption are to be expected, now is the right time to take countermeasures and prevent complications later on.

We recommend a visit to the orthodontist in particular if you have visible misaligned or crooked teeth, noticeably protruding incisors or problems with your bite.

In individual cases, it may be advisable to consult an orthodontist as early as infancy. This applies, for example, to babies who breathe through their mouth or have problems breastfeeding. If you are unsure, we will be happy to carry out a thorough examination in Zurich to rule out possible growth problems and malformations.

How does orthodontic treatment for children work?

Before the actual treatment, our orthodontist will meet you for a detailed consultation. After an initial examination, he will discuss with you whether orthodontic treatment is necessary and what measures he recommends. The child will also be involved in the consultation so that he or she understands the subsequent treatment steps exactly.

The orthodontist will then work with you to create a suitable treatment plan. For children, this often includes braces treatment to gently correct misaligned teeth. Using impressions of the upper and lower jaw, the braces are custom-made and then fitted by the orthodontist.

From then on, regular check-ups are held at which the orthodontist checks the progress of the treatment. The braces are regularly readjusted so that the teeth move into the correct position step by step.

As soon as the desired result is achieved, the retention phase begins. Here we stabilize the tooth position with fixed retainers or removable retention splints to prevent the teeth from moving back again. During the retention phase, your child has practically no restrictions in everyday life and can show off a radiant smile again.
