Snoring noises are caused by vibrations when the throat is partially blocked during breathing. Such a blockage can be caused, for example, by the slack soft palate or the tongue falling back into the throat during sleep.

Wearing a snoring splint does not normally have any side effects. However, a certain adjustment phase is required at the beginning, during which slight tension in the jaw or a dry feeling in the mouth may occur. Gradually extending the wearing time makes it easier to get used to, so that the side effects mentioned subside more quickly.

The snoring splint should be cleaned thoroughly after each use. You can use cold or warm water, a soft toothbrush and some toothpaste (alternatively liquid soap or a special cleaning solution). Avoid using hot water, toothpaste with abrasive particles, scouring agents or aggressive chemicals. These substances could deform or damage the material and thus shorten the life of your snoring splint.

Constricted airways during sleep cause the surrounding tissue to vibrate when you breathe in and out. There can be many causes for this. Some people suffer from anatomical conditions such as narrowed (nose / throat) or slack airways. Others snore due to factors such as enlarged tonsils, nasal polyps, a receding lower jaw or a deviated nasal septum, which forces them to breathe through their mouth. Various illnesses, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), allergies or chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses can also contribute to snoring.

Other risk factors include being overweight, sleeping in a supine position and chronic fatigue or lack of sleep. The consumption of alcohol or nicotine often increases snoring.

The durability depends on use and care. In general, a snoring splint can be used for around 3 to 5 years – considering it still fits perfectly and is cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis.
