At our dental practice in Zurich, we always strive to preserve the natural tooth for as long as possible. In cases of severe damage, we often manage to do this by performing root canal treatment. We remove the damaged tissue from the root canals, clean and desinfect them. The root canals are sealed to prevent bacteria from re-infecting them.

We carry out root canal treatment in Zurich on teeth whose pulp is severely inflamed and which cannot be treated in any other way. In such cases, root canal treatment is often the last chance to preserve the natural tooth. With modern technologies, root canal treatment can now be carried out very gently and with little pain, so that you can approach the treatment with complete peace of mind.

Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment in Zurich

Root canal treatment is necessary for teeth whose root or pulp is severely inflamed, but which should still be preserved. These are usually teeth with caries or leakages under composite or amalgam fillings. Even if a tooth is damaged in an accident, bacteria can penetrate under certain circumstances. This results in painful inflammation, which can usually only be treated by root canal treatment.

We carry out root canal treatment in Zurich under local anesthesia, so that the treatment itself is not associated with any pain for you. Only in the case of highly severe inflammation is it possible that slight pain may occur despite anesthesia. On request, we can also advise you in our dental practice on treatment with nitrous oxide sedation or under general anesthesia if the thought of root canal treatment makes you very anxious.

Most of our patients can return to work straight away. Depending on the type of anesthesia you have chosen, we may advise you to take a day off work. If possible, you should refrain from sport for a few days.

Swiss health insurance companies do not normally cover the costs of root canal treatment unless you have supplementary dental insurance.

How does root canal treatment work in Zurich?

If your dentist determines that a tooth can only be saved by root canal treatment, he or she will first discuss the next steps with you. X-rays will be taken to precisely assess the condition of the tooth. The dentist will also use the x-rays to explain how to proceed with the root canal treatment. In some cases, it may be useful to take 3D x-rays (DVT) in addition to the classic x-ray image.

Root canal treatment can normally be carried out under local anesthesia. If a difficult procedure is planned or you are very afraid of root canal treatment, we will be happy to advise you on root canal treatment under sedation or general anesthesia. However, you don`t need to fear that the treatment will be very painful. Thanks to modern technologies, we can now carry out root canal treatment very gently.

After the tooth has been completely anesthetized, the dentist opens the crown. Using loupe glasses, he examines the treatment area and then begins to clean out the root canals. Inflammatory tissue, pulp and the dental nerve are removed mechanically or vaporized using laser technology.

The dentist then cleans the root canal, smoothes it out and fills it with a special sealing material. This prevents bacteria from penetrating the root tip again. The tooth is restored with a filling or a temporary restoration. If a crowning is planned, we will carry this out promptly at a separate appointment.

Root canal treatment in Zurich often requires several sessions. This is particularly the case for multi-rooted teeth, for which we require 2 - 3 treatment appointments at intervals of 4 - 6 weeks. Your dentist will plan the root canal treatment procedure with you in advance, as well as the subsequent treatment with a stabilizing CEREC Onlay, Crown or ceramic restauration produced by the dental technician.

What needs to be considered after root canal treatment?

After root canal treatment, you should take it easy and avoid moving your mouth too much. Your dentist will usually prescribe a mouthwash, which you should use as prescribed. We will be happy to prescribe an analgesic to relieve any initial pain. We recommend that you carefully cool the treatment area to counteract swelling.

A few months after the root canal treatment, we take another X-ray in Zurich to check that the inflammation has completely healed.
